Sichuan outplayed Jiangsu 91-81 to claim its first title at the Chinese National Women's Basketball Championship in Guangyuan, Sichuan Province on Friday.
Five Sichuan players reached double figures, led by the Most Valuable Player Wang Xuemeng, who achieved all-around stats of 23 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the final. Li Shuangfei and Gao Song added 21 and 19 points to Sichuan respectively, making Jiangsu center Xu Chenyan's game-high 31 points in vain.
After registering three lop-sided victories in group matches, title favorite Sichuan continued its momentum to eliminate Shanxi in the quarters and Inner Mongolia in the semis.
Going into the fourth quarter with a 62-61 advantage, Sichuan began to pull away from there, outscoring Jiangsu 29-20 down the stretch en route to its historic national championship.
After signing several Chinese internationals, including Li Meng and Han Xu, Sichuan has made steady improvements in recent years, finishing fourth and second respectively in the last two seasons' Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA) league.
